Dental Implants on the Gold Coast: Understanding Your Options for Replacing Missing Teeth

Missing teeth can affect more than the appearance of your smile. Chewing function, speech clarity, jawbone health and the alignment of surrounding teeth can all be impacted over time. Dental implants are one of the most widely used approaches to replacing missing teeth, offering a foundation designed to integrate with the jawbone and support a fixed or removable restoration.

This guide provides an overview of the different implant options available on the Gold Coast, how they work, and what to consider when exploring whether implants may be suitable for your situation.

How Dental Implants Work

A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. Over a healing period of several months, the implant is designed to integrate with the surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration. Osseointegration is “the direct structural and functional connection between living bone and the surface of a load-bearing artificial implant, commonly titanium”. Once integrated, the implant serves as an anchor for a crown bridge, or denture.

Not everyone is a suitable candidate for implants. Factors such as bone density, gum health, medical history, and lifestyle habits (such as smoking) all play a role in determining suitability. A thorough clinical assessment, including 3D imaging (CBCT scan), is the first step in understanding whether implants are an appropriate option for you.

Single Tooth Implants

When one tooth is missing, a single implant topped with a custom ceramic crown can replace both the root and the visible tooth. This approach avoids the need to modify adjacent healthy teeth, which is required when placing a traditional bridge. Single implants also provide stimulation to the jawbone, which may help slow the bone loss that naturally occurs after tooth extraction.

Multiple Teeth and Implant-Supported Bridges

When several teeth are missing in the same area, an implant-supported bridge may be considered. Rather than placing one implant per missing tooth, two or more implants can support a fixed bridge spanning the gap. This approach reduces the number of surgical sites while restoring chewing function and appearance across the affected area.

Full Arch Replacement (All-on-X)

For patients who have lost most or all of their teeth in one or both jaws, full arch replacement using the All-on-X concept may be an option. This approach typically uses four to six implants to support a full set of fixed teeth. The implants are strategically angled to maximise contact with available bone, which may reduce or eliminate the need for bone grafting in some cases.

Implant-Supported Dentures (Overdentures)

For patients who currently wear conventional dentures and experience issues with stability or comfort, implant-supported dentures (also known as overdentures) may provide an alternative. Two to four implants are placed in the jaw, and the denture clips or locks onto the implants, offering improved retention during eating and speaking. The denture can still be removed for cleaning.

What Influences the Cost of Dental Implants on the Gold Coast

The cost of dental implants varies based on several clinical factors rather than a single fixed figure. These include:

  • Number and type of implants required – a single implant differs significantly from a full arch restoration
  • Need for preparatory procedures – bone grafting, sinus lifts, or extraction of remaining teeth may be required before implant placement
  • Type of restoration – a ceramic crown, a bridge, or a full denture, each involves different laboratory and material requirements
  • Complexity of the case – bone density, medical history, and the position of the implant all influence surgical planning
  • Private health insurance – some policies provide partial coverage for implant components. Always confirm your entitlements with your insurer before treatment

At Bundall Dental and Implants, we provide a detailed treatment plan and fee estimate during your initial consultation so you can make an informed decision.
